The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
